Why the experience differs even when the law doesn’t
Because the RTE Act neither explicitly permits nor bans homeschooling, day-to-day treatment falls to local interpretation — by individual schools, local education officers, and occasionally child welfare bodies. Kerala
Kerala has an active, long-standing homeschooling community, but its child welfare machinery is relatively assertive compared to other states. Documentation and a clear, calm explanation of your approach go further here than in states with a lighter regulatory touch.
Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra
Delhi’s large, mobile population means schools and officials have generally seen more unconventional education paths. Bengaluru has one of India’s largest homeschooling communities with strong co-op networks. Mumbai and Pune both have established groups, and administrators are relatively used to non-traditional academic histories.

- Don’t assume your neighbour’s experience is universal — even within the same city, experiences can differ.
